The new transmission oil — Valtra Transmission XT 60
09/18/2009Valtra has collaborated with a lubricant supplier and a manufacturer of key components to develop and test a new transmission oil with Valtra G2-08 classification.
Valtra's new transmissions—especially the continuously variable Direct model—place increasingly more demanding requirements on the oil being used. The new oil will fully replace the former Valtra Transmission HT60 oil, i.e. the new oil can be used in all older Valtra tractors as well.
Oils with a high viscosity index tend to shear (become thinner) in tough working conditions. Valtra Transmission XT60 contains new additives, ensuring an excellent shear resistance. "The viscosity of the oil and as such its lubricating capability remain closer to the properties of new oil for the entire life span of the product — even when the oil is hot", says Ville Suihkonen, one of Valtra's product development engineers.
XT60 also performs better in cold temperatures than ever before. It ensures that machines will start easily in cold weather and that power loss will be kept to a minimum. The XT60 has superior oxidation resistance, which is important due to the temperature peaks in the hydrostatic units of the continuously variable transmissions, for example. The correct friction properties for multi-disc clutches and brakes are also guaranteed with the new XT60.
Thanks to the improved properties of the new oil and the separate working hydraulics oil, the transmission oil change interval has been extended to 2000 hours on the new Versu and Direct models. However, the oil change interval cannot be extended on older Valtra models as the transmission and the working hydraulics system use the same oil. This means that dirt, water and other oils may enter the system through the working hydraulics. For these models, the oil change interval will remain 1000 hours. For most of our customers, we highly recommend that transmission oil be used as the working hydraulics oil as well in Versu and Direct models. If a customer uses the same implements with a Versu or Direct model and with an older tractor model, this prevents a scenario where hydraulic oil with additives that are unsuitable for transmission use enters the transmission system on the older tractor via the implement.
We recommend the sole use of Valtra lubricants in order to attain the best performance and durability.
The graph indicates the viscosity values of a typical tractor transmission oil and of the new Valtra Transmission XT60 oil. The values have been analysed after a transmission test.
